NIOMR /ASTRAL/ ALL-ATLANTIC BLUE SCHOOLS NETWORK ON CHILDREN’S DAY  FIESTA 2024 

The NIOMR /ASTRAL/ ALL-ATLANTIC BLUE SCHOOLS NETWORK children’s day fiesta 2024 was held on the 27th May, 2024 at the NIOMR conference room. There were 13 schools in attendance 10 participants per school comprising of 8 student and 2 teachers.  Also in attendance are the 16 ASTRAL team members, some staff of NIOMR including the CEO, Prof. Abiodun Sule, and the Director of Research, Dr P. Obatuola, the IOI-Nigeria Director and staff, representatives of Eco-Restoration Foundation and Lekan Bakare Foundation.  A total of 178 participants 98 female and 80 male were in attendance.

The program started with the arrival of guest from 9:30, the theme of the program is Children’s Day fiesta 2024, School campaign, Social Awareness on Seafood for The Future (IMTA), and Ocean Literacy”.   

The opening speech was given by the Lear of ASTRAL, followed by the ED/CRO address. 

Six presentations made by ASTRAL members. : 

  • Overview of NIOMR ASTRAL Project and School campaign (Dr. Olaitan)

  • Seafood  and Food Safety (Dr. Olaitan)

  • IMTA –Integrated Multi Trophic Aquaculture (Dr. Ajijo) 

  • Ocean literacy  for primary and post – primary (Dr. Poopola)

  • Social Awareness Campaign ( the involvement of Schools )

  • Ocean Influence and Aquatic Pollution (Dr. Ladigbolu)

After the presentations, the educational game began comprising of quiz from the presentation, ASTRAL cross words, cross match and the jigsaw. The students in attendance are a combination of both primary and secondary school students.  The ASTRAL/ AABSN who participant this year fiesta are:

  • Didado Secondary  Schools, Lagos, Nigeria

  • The Pottersland College, Lagos, Nigeria

  • Shiny Star School, Lagos, Nigeria

  • Nanti Primary School, Lagos, Nigeria

  • At-Tahleel School, Lagos, Nigeria

  • Fidex College, Lagos, Nigeria

  • Itedo Nursery and Primary School, Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria 

The winners of the games category were presented with award.  All the schools were presented with a plaque and fish chat calendars.  The schools went to the marinebiology laboratory museum for the exhibition on ocean resources. The program ended at 2:35 pm.
