ASTRAL All-Atlantic 2021 Pledge

As the blue economy and sustainable aquaculture cannot be reached without measures towards gender equality, the ASTRAL project has pledged to promote women's empowerment and Gender Mainstreaming in sustainable aquaculture along the Atlantic area. ASTRAL took the pledge on the third of June 2021 as part of the ‘All-Atlantic 2021 pledging campaign’.

Women account for approximately 40% of the farming population in developing countries, thus education and economic empowerment are quite critical for nation-building and food security. ASTRAL dedicates specific activities to the aquaculture gender socio-economic, as an Atlantic commitment to women’s empowerment and gender mainstreaming in aquaculture. Promoting women as equal and productive partners, with significant impacts on household nutrition and living standards, is crucial to reach the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals [SDG] 2 (end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture) and 5 (achieve gender equality and empower all girls and women). This pledge is categorised within the scientific area of food security, ocean resources and biodiversity.

Within the list of pledge deliverables, there is to be one workshop to be carried out in 2022 in Nigeria to support the empowerment of women in aquaculture. This workshop will support the involvement of women in aquaculture by promoting and supporting their entry into new/emerging markets and profitable enterprises/businesses in EU and non-EU Atlantic countries. More information will be made available on our social media channels Linkedin, Twitter and Facebook, so make sure to follow us for updates.
