Aquaculture Europe 2021

Natalia Ospina-Alvarez and Tânia Li Chen (AIR Centre, Portugal) presented the poster ‘Promoting Blue Economy: Towards a Sustainable Aquaculture Production and Consumption in the Atlantic’, where they introduced how the ASTRAL project in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) contributes to sustainable aquaculture for food security and ocean conservation.

AIR CENTRE also promoted the ‘Strategic guidelines for a more sustainable and competitive EU aquaculture for the period 2021-2030’.

“It was very pleasant to finally have the opportunity to meet in person in Madeira for the Aquaculture Europe 2021 event. The Conference had a very good attendance and the sessions were interesting with lively discussion. The coffee breaks, happy hours, lunch and dinners gave us the opportunity to have discussions with old and new acquaintances and to actively network. It was also a great opportunity to discuss collaborations with our sister projects, especially AquaVitae and to define the way forward.”

Elisa Ravagnan, ASTRAL Coordinator

Results from ASTRAL project were presented in the IMTA/Aquaponic session held on Thursday 7th of October (5 Integrated Multi-trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) Laboratories, ONE GOAL – Resilient Aquaculture In The Face of Emerging Threats: ASTRAL PROJECT - Presented by: Pauline O’Donohoe, Brett Macey, Tomás Chalde, Luis Poersch, Adrian Macleod, Elisa Ravagnan)

And The Effect of Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus on suspended solids consumption when integrated with Litopenaeus vannamei in Biofloc System - Presented by: Luis Poersch, Mariana Holanda, Alessandro Cardoso, Gabriele Lara, Plinio Furtado, Gabriel Santana, Wilson Wasielesky. The session generated quite a lot of interest and had good attendance. The two talks were well received and prompted quite a lot of interest from the audience.

“I presented in the EAS - Aquaculture 2021 a paper as a result of the ASTRAL project. The presentation title was EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE AND FOOD RESTRICTION ON COMPENSATORY GROWTH OF PACIFIC WHITE SHRIMP Litopenaeus vannamei IN BIOFLOC SYSTEM”

“It was very good to be in Funchal for EAS meeting. It was also great to finally talk in person with several people, including people from Astral project.”

Researchers of FURG prepared two presentations to show the results of the ASTRAL project. The first, entitled "EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE AND FOOD RESTRICTION ON COMPENSATORY GROWTH OF PACIFIC WHITE SHRIMP Litopenaeus vannamei IN BIOFLOC SYSTEM" was presented by Dr. Wilson Wasielesky in the “Novel ingredients feeds and feeding for aquaculture" session. The second presentation, entitled "EFFECT OF TILAPIA Oreochromis niloticus ON SUSPENDED SOLIDS CONSUMPTION WHEN INTEGRATED WITH Litopenaeus vannamei IN BIOFLOC SYSTEM", was given by Dr. Luis Poersch in the "Integrated Multi-trophic" session.

During the conference in Funchal for EAS meeting the FURG team had the opportunity to interact with other ASTRAL colleagues from Portugal, Spain, France and Norway and researchers from AquaVitae, EATip and BlueEconet. We considered these interactions very constructive as they brought about new questions and triggered coordinated actions.
